Submerged Arc Welding for Space Frame Structures

2025-08-01

Submerged arc welding for space frame structures is a mechanized welding method that uses an electric arc as the heat source. During the submerged arc welding process, the slag and gases produced by melting effectively protect the arc and molten pool, while also serving to deoxidize and alloy the metal. When used in conjunction with welding wire, this ensures the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the weld metal, preventing defects such as cracks and porosity in the weld.

Advantages of submerged arc welding:

  1. High production efficiency: Submerged arc welding is an automatic continuous welding process that can utilize multiple wires for simultaneous welding, resulting in high production efficiency.
  2. Excellent weld quality: Due to slag protection, the molten metal does not come into contact with air, reducing nitrogen content in the weld metal. Additionally, the molten pool solidifies slowly, allowing sufficient metallurgical reactions between the liquid metal and molten filler wire, thereby minimizing the likelihood of porosity and cracks in the weld. The welding flux and process parameters are automatically regulated to maintain stability, requiring low operator skill levels. The weld bead has good formation, stable composition, and excellent mechanical properties, resulting in high-quality welds.
  3. Improved working conditions: Submerged arc welding does not expose the arc light, eliminating arc radiation, reducing labor intensity, and providing a better working environment.
